San Dan Gi

San Dan Gi or three level training, is an exercise widely practiced in Goju Ryu karate dojo's and is used to teach timing, transition from one stance to the next, control and distance. It is a preparatory tool for kata and kumite. Beginners will learn and become confident in this exercise before moving onto learning kata and its many turns, spills and thrills!

There are many versions practiced in Goju Ryu karate but at G.I.F.T. dojo we practice five of these.

San Dan Gi Number One (Attacks / Semete)

Step forward in Sanchin Dachi and punch Jodan Tsuki
Step forward in Sanchin Dachi and punch Chudan Tsuki
Step forward into Naname Shiko Dachi and punch Gedan Tsuki
(45 degree straddle stance)
It is important to note that the feet must remain in contact with the floor whilst moving, making a crescent shaped movement.
This is known as 'Sanchin stepping'.
However, when done at full speed and power the feet move in a straight line.
San Dan GI Number One (Defence / Ukete)

Step back into Sanchin Dachi and block Jodan Age Uke
Step back into Sanchin Dachi and block Chudan Uke
Step back into Naname Shiko Dachi and block Gedan Harai Uke
